I,m appalled to read this treatment of bona fide visitors to the UK

lets face it a lot of Expats failed to register here even though they have lived here for some time and the EU nationals in uk have had quite a hard time of residency in uk Fees, excesive paperwork and now this !!

I just hope we don't see repercussions

As usual, the guardian has gone overboard with its outlook on what is happening  at the border.  Everyone, including British, are treated the same.  We went through Gatwick a couple of weeks ago and, yes the border-guard was an obnoxious moron, but he did his job.  We were asked for our fit-to-fly certificate (he checked it quite thoroughly), our track and trace form (checking who it was we were going to stay with, our relationship etc.), checking we had booked our tests for days 2 & 8, (day 5 on its own isn’t good enough), once he was satisfied we were allowed to leave.  A number of Brits were asked to wait for further checks.  So, that tells me everyone is having difficulty over there, not just visitors to the country.

I'm  afraid that Brexit , Boris and his nasty cohort is what has happened  to the UK. I am utterly ashamed of this government, and so sorry for all our European friends.

I am definitely not condoning this behavior but now is not the best time to travel looking for work. I know some people are in really tough situations but it seems all countries are behaving appallingly.  Not just the UK.

A 78 year old friend arrived from Mexico back home to Vancouver, Canada and was greeted by a bunch of 19 year old's with new uniforms and puffed up opinions of their responsibility to issue fines to all who refuse the hotel package dictated by the  Govt. Because this individual had had a very bad accident in Mexico and had back surgery he was in a wheelchair.  When you arrive by air to Canada you are forced to stay in a hotel at a cost of $2000 with guards for 3 days (minimum) and have two positive test results.  Because this fella just wanted to get home he was issued with a $3500 dollar fine for refusing to go.  And the government can put him in jail if he doesn't pay.

So it seems to me that Covid is an excuse for organizations of all types (including Governments, Borders, etc) to act in inexcusable ways.  But this is the new order it appears we have to all get used to.  The old days are well and truly over.

Its not just the U.K. , Only a few weeks ago over 40 British passengers were refused entry into Spain were put back onto the flight and flown back to the U.K. , Even though they showed correct documentation and letters etc before they boarded, I think they were mostly home owners and others who were actually flying back to Spain to collect their residency documentation after being told to come by the Spanish authorities ?

That's right Jet, as always it depends on who the border guard is. In the particular case you mention they were not even allowed to collect their luggage but escorted back to the plane by armed police. They even refused the captain to take off on time thereby missing his slot until every one of the deportees were on board. There's been several silly incidents of EU guards taking silly action like the confiscation of a driver's sandwiches and bourbons being confiscated because they were bought in the UK.
