Hi,

I can recomend you that when you come to Spain you can contact with Tiekom (www.tiekom.com). They can offer you services such as fiber, 4G , mobile plans...

Regards

Hi Josh

You could try OliveNet.

They provide high speed fibre broadband up to 1,000 MB which may be a bit quicker than you are used to in the UK.

If you choose a 24 month contract then installation is free although, in my case, they had to dig up my porch to repair a blocked duct and they charged €100 for that.

Router is from Huawei and there is no charge for that provided that you return it to OliveNet if you cancel the contract and a €90 penalty if you do not return it.

Monthly rates are as follows:

€19.90 - Internet up to 100 MB

€29.90 - Internet up to 300 MB

€39.90 - Internet up to 500 MB

€99.90 - Internet up to 1 GB

I chose 100 MB and this plenty fast for normal use ie internet browsing, streaming music and films and/or video conferencing.

The best part is, if this is for a second home, you can put the service into standby mode for up to 9 months of each year and pay nothing during those months so that is just €60 per year or an average of €5 per month.

After signing the contract online, OliveNet attend your home after about 1 week (you may need to chase them) and should complete installation then, however, they may need to return if building works are required.

Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Philip

I think the most important thing is customer service.  If something goes wrong who do you call?  Do they speak in English?  Probably not is the answer.

I know alot of folks do not like Movistar but I have a very good package with them that includes Fiber Wifi, TV, Home Phone and Mobile Phone.  Now you maybe just need Internet which is fine too.  You should check them out because many other's do not cover all areas.  I have also found their service very stable over the past 4 years.

By phone they do have English support but not easy to get one to talk to when you need them!.  :)

However, they also have WhatsApp Chat support whereby its easy enough to translate the conversation.  Its fast and efficient.

Maybe all have the ability to check and manage your services online, but Movistar does so you can stay on top of everything easily.

The other thing to check is whether the package will increase in price after 3 months or so.  I have heard so many stories about cheap start ups that get progressively more expensive.

Finally, yes the ability to turn off the charges whilst away is critical.  I believe, but please check, that most companies will do this.  Depends on the contract possibly.

In London, however I have fibre broadband from Virgin, I pay more than £110 per month for the privilege and the service is very unreliable. English speaking agents help, however, the engineers often take several days to carry out repairs.

OliveNet are Russian owned and employ Russian and Ukrainian expat who speak Spanish and most of them speak English too.

My Spanish is limited and we have always emailed and spoken in English. The contractors made light work of digging up the porch to find a blocked duct and repaired it all within a couple of hours.

I have only had my OliveNet fibre broadband for a few weeks and, therefore, cannot comment about reliability but no problems to date.  I can watch TV through the broadband and do not need a landline telephone.

I don't doubt that Tiekom provide a great service, however, it is not the best price by a long way:

1. Tiekom installation cost is Euro 85 when OliveNet make no charge on a 2 year contract; and

2. Tiekom monthly charges are Euro 50.90 which is more than 2 1/2 more than OliveNet which charges from Euro 19.99.

Sometimes, you get what you pay for, but not always. I have had no problems with OliveNet.

The OliveNet broad band runs a fibre connection right into the house and does not use copper telephone wires.

I find that it just works.  The cost is very reasonable.

In the UK, I pay £112 per month for Virgin which is fast when it works, but that is not all the time and they do not provide a better service than other providers who charge as little as £20.

Currently, the Virgin broadband is not working because of 'technical reasons' and engineers expect this outage to continue until 9 August 2021 and offer me £3 per day compensation!
