'How to get state healthcare when you’re on holiday or travelling to Spain'

You can use a UK prescription to get medicines, including special food required for medical reasons, in Spain.

Prescription medicines are not free in Spain. With an EHIC or GHIC you get a reduced rate, but you’ll still pay:

  • 50% of the prescription price
  • 10% of the prescription price if you have a UK State Pension ‒ you may need to show proof that you’re a pensioner to pay this rate

These prescription charges are non-refundable.

EHIC only for holiday travel, you will need 'Private Health Care' if under 65, if above you can still get an S1 from UK before you move. Private health care is very cheap here compared to UK, I pay less than 30% of what BUPA charged in the UK . This Spanish division https://www.sanitasexpat.com/quote_me/ Get a quote

Where you will be a trouble is if you have any serious pre-existing conditions.

You are fine for holidays with your EHIC, just tricky if you wanted to move here,
