We are planning on retiring to Costa del sol, like most people we want to be walk-able to the beach (20 mins max) walking distance to bars/shops, but we need a garage space and a garden for our two Tibetan terriers, not sure of the best areas, want to be with ex-pats but also want to speak a bit of Spanish. Now do we rent for a bit while we look for a permanent property, or can someone out there point us to the area which would suit us? cheers guys.

Hi there,

I think renting at first is better. Places that seem good at first sight don't always match expectations, whether in the UK or here that is usually the case. I had my heart set on a particular village but, just spending a couple of nights in a hotel there showed me it would not have been a place to live - holidays yes but, as a home, no. Often, you hear about property for sale by word of mouth, a lot of locals don't use agents and you might find something perfect just by chatting to someone in the bread shop! Buying property here is different from the UK, not difficult but different. Being here makes it easier to navigate the process, doing it from the UK is frustrating and stressful.

I hope you find the home of your dreams!

Cancelada is a nice area, it's a small original village community just over the A7, with bars & restaurants, chemist, post office, bakery, bank etc. You can walk from there, across the footbridge, and be down at the beach in 15 minutes.  It's halfway between San Pedro and Estepona.

Hi,

Lots of beautiful areas to look at.  I had my heart set on Nueva Andalucia and i have now bought in Torrenueva, La Cala.   Minutes walk to the beautiful beaches, little supermarket with everything, a few bars, restaurants but a lovely classy little area.  Lots of brits and Spanish and right in the middle Fuengirola on the bus 15min, then also about the same to Marbella..

We do not drive in Spain (yet) and find that most places deliver (which is fantastic) for us.  Large shopping mall also in Fuengirola and Marbella, everything you could need. If i can help with anything please just ask.  Good luck and have fun.
