Some opinions on this answer are, at very very best, no better than 'bar opinions'. Citizens Advice Spain or a lawyer (or several lawyers) can be better relied on to be accurate. Under EU Freedom of Movement there are clear rules re how many consecutive days UK citizens can stay in Spain without becoming residents. The fact that so many choose to be effectively illegal immigrants (forget the word expat when it comes to law) doesn't make them right, as the headlong rush of thousands to legalise themselves in the last weeks once they realised their 'predicament' has shown. Many of them would be the first to have negative things to say about immigration to UK, and in many cases, without even understanding the implications for their lives in the sun, support Brexit. In answer to your question, applying for Residència is a serious legal commitment and I doubt you could do it from a distance. I am sure you would put yourself on the wrong side of the law should you find a way. And for those who think Spain 'needs' the British and will do and pay anything to keep us here, the evidence is that they will be willing to be positive towards those who are legally here as long as their citizens in UK have their interests respected, remembering always that the Spanish in UK are largely working and paying taxes, unlike the majority of the Brits in Spain. Leaving the EU will render UK citizens '3rd country', so retiring here post-exit will be on a par with say, Americans, requiring evidence of considerable assets and income.  I hope this response has introduced a note of realism to the thread.

All good points I have often said myself. Brexit is a bloody shambles!
