We are moving out, to Spain before December this year. We are confused as to what car insurance we will need, Spainish or Uk . Does it depend on how long we are in Spain for any one period. If we stay in Spain for 6 months then return to the Uk for 2 months, can we still insure the Uk registered vehicle in the Uk but still be covered whilst in Spain. We are getting different information from UK insurers ?    Any help would be most helpful.  Is it more expensive to insure the car in Spain ?   Thanks Tom/Viv

Hi Tom & Viv

If you are bringing a left hand drive car to Spain it has to be reregistered here after 6 months and have modifications and it’s expensive.

Insurance here is a bit more expensive than in U.K. as there are more cars on roads & more accidents. The most popular seems to be Linea Directa (direct line) who offer a green card and roadside assistance as standard. Not sure if green card will include U.K. after December.

Bare in mind that car parks are geared to right hand drive, so it’s awkward if driving with no passenger.

Hope this helps, and good luck with everything.

Hi Tom/Viv

UK car insurance will cover you for the minimum required cover in the country you are in (Usually "Third Party") for 12 months. This might change for policies renewed after 31/12/20 (Brexit) & we'll all need to check next year

You can usually extend to "comprehensive" in Europe, although my insurer limits to 90 days & this may well be standard with other insurers. Again check with your insurer
