Hi - I’m looking to escape the Scottish winter and plan to drive to the costa del sol for 6-8 weeks. We plan taking 3 - 4 days to travel but need accommodation enroute that caters for a small dog - any suggestions for travelling through France and Spain with stop offs would be much appreciated - thanks

We do it twice a year with two dogs from North Wales. Our route is Brittany Ferries from Plymouth to Santander. Our dogs stay together in kennels on board but dog friendly kennels available if you can get one… we then drive halfway and stay overnight preferably just south of Madrid in Aranjuez at Hotel Mercedes which is a great stopover with lovely dog walking along the river. Next day we drive to our house near Fuengirola…same in reverse on way back although it does depend on sailing times. Occasionally we have had to stop the other side of Madrid…

Firstly google dog friendly hotels / hostals along the route and aim to get to each destination at a certain time. I stopped every 2 hours for my dog to stretch his legs, wee, etc.....still managed to get to south of France from Calais within first day of travel even with some 5 stops ... I found several pet friendly hostals which were relatively cheap - between 60-90 euros per night.  It's best to aim for 3 days from arrival in France to rest and enjoy what is basically a boring journey (and relatively expensive with tolls) as this is better for both humans and pets.   On each of the two nightly stops I managed a good meal and a good night's rest as did pampered Pet.

Hi,

I travel to casares del sol with a dog from calais using p and o ferries as their pet lounge is great, free coffee and drinks plus you can stretch your legs with your dog. No need for a muzzle. Have also used Eurotunnel which is good too, more expensive but dog can stay in car with you.

We break the journey up over 2 nights.  one stay over in France and one in Spain so each journey is no more than an eight hour drive. Obviously stopping every couple of hours for tea break and toilet break for the dog.

There are plenty of pet friendly hotels/apartments along the way its just researching the best ones so you don't have to deviate from the motorways.

Dont forget your AHC fir the journey unless you have a pet passport..

Hope this helps and have a great journey..
