We would like to move out to Fuengirola in the near future, can anyone tell us where we can get information regarding health cover, and what are the requirements for registering with a GP/Dentist etc?

Grateful for any help

Many thanks

Jean & Chris

An important question regarding healthcare,   Are either of you of retirement age and drawing UK state pension?

Good morning Steve,

We are both retired and drawing our pension.  We hope to come to Fuengirola shortly for two weeks in order to get all our questions answered, just not sure who we need to go to, to do this.

Hi Jean,

If you intend on moving to Spain permanently you can transfer your healthcare cover over to the Spanish healthcare system via the S1 healthcare scheme which is paid for by the UK government. You can get all your prescriptions etc from your new assigned doctor at the local healthcare centre. There are now to be dentist surgery within the local health centre.

To be able to move to Spain permanently you will need to apply for a visa. Retired people usually apply for the non lucrative visa (NLV)

You will need to prove that you have an income of around 28,800 euros plus 7,000 for the second person so between you you would need to have an income of around 34,000 euros. You will need to prove that you have your healthcare cover too....

You will need to apply for the NLV through the nearest Spanish consulate either London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

Hope I've helped you somewhat.

Good evening Steve

I forgot to mention earlier that Chris is in the process of applying for an Irish passport (Irish mother) therefore that would negate the need for a visa wouldn't it?  However, can one apply for an NLV while in the UK or does the application have to be made when living in Spain?

Hi Jean,

If your husband can get an Irish passport it would be great as he would not have to get the NLV and you could automatically join him in Spain as his spouse. However during the first 90 days of arrival in Spain you would need to register your presence at the National Police station and prove that you have an income and healthcare.

Here is a link that explains everything if you have an Irish passport:

https://administracion.gob.es/pag_Home/en/Tu-espacio-europeo/derechos-obligaciones/ciudadanos/residencia/obtencion-residencia/inscribirte-residente.html

If you are applying for the NLV you have to apply while you are still living in the UK. You will need to attend interviews at the UK Spanish consulate which is nearest to where you live, either London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

Applying from Spain is not acceptable.

Steve

Hi Jean,

I have lived in Benidorm for over 10 years. We moved here after taking early retirement and have (and still) enjoying every day.
