I have driven from Calais so I know that route. But this time I would like to avoid tolls.

I am also thinking of driving from Santander or Bilbao?

Best route avoiding tolls please??

Hi Tel,

I use Google Maps to drive around Spain and its really pretty good. Once you have directions set there is a Setting to avoid Tolls.  You can of course also do this on your computer so you can see how much longer the trips are without tolls and assess whether you are saving anything.  One thing I always bear in mind is that you can go faster on Toll Roads so if you want to get somewhere faster without the chance of a 200e ticket the toll road could be cheaper.  :)   Especially for someone like me since the 80km on the regular roads is painfully slow.

Hi

From Bilbao I have never avoided tolls completely because the best route out of Bilbao is a toll road, I have by switching my sat nav to no tolls been forced down terrible routes from Bilbao to Burgos. So don’t do that!

Once you reach Burgos set your nav to no tolls and it is quite easy to traverse North to south on decent fast roads with no tolls. Santander is different and you can run from there to funny gorilla with zero tolls.

We usually head from Santander/Bilbao to Burgos, Burgos to Madrid and there  ensure you take the radial roads rather than straight through the middle route (sat nav will take you straight through and that is awful),

Then head from Madrid to Granada and hang a right at Granada and this will take you to Malaga.

It’s easy now after probably 20 times, but it’s about setting your nav on No tolls at the right time and circling Madrid.

I do Bilbao/Santander to Los Pacos in about 9 hours.

It’s a lovely drive and I really enjoy doing it! As opposed to going through France which is a drudge to say the least with loads of tolls.

If you think a  Brittany ferry is dear, calculate your tolls and your fuel through France  and the fact that you can have a break and a mini cruise in the middle, and I choose the Uk-spain ferry every time!
