Hi, We’re considering buying a property in Fuengirola in the new year. Initially it will be a getaway home whilst I’m still working but intend to be get out at least once a month. I’d love to hear from anyone who owns or lives there and your experiences of owning: living there. Any advice about areas to buywould be appreciated. We would be without a car so accessibility is a must for us. Many Thanks,  Maria

Hi. I’m just buying now in the centre of ‘old’ Fuengirola and signing a reservation contract tomorrow …. with a move-in date during December. I have done all my due diligence and have an English-speaking lawyer and discovered all the costs both at purchase and running costs. I am getting the lawyer to apply for a NIE and bank account - not because of anything other than it’s simpler for me and I budgeted this into my costs. NIE necessary to pay direct debits for water, electricity, community fees, local rates and broadband. I could save a few hundred €‘s applying for NIE and bank accounts etc but, from the UK, it’s not worth the hassle. Like you, it’ll be a base to come back and forth and I particularly chose Fuengirola since it is at the end of the present Malaga airport-Fuengirola railway run and my place is in the middle of the city, about eight minutes walk from the station.

Hi, thanks so much for you really helpful reply. It’s so good to get advice from a fellow purchaser and I’ll take note when buying.  I love the vibe in Fuengirola and it feels like the place for us to buy. Good luck to you I bet you can’t wait to move in.  I hope you have many happy years there. I bet you can’t wait to move in.

I’m not really ‘moving in’ … more like preparing for many short visits by buying furniture and everything that make a home. Lastly, I shall follow my own advice to others - and that is that I propose to have a good stab at learning Spanish and will shortly look for 1 to 1 lessons rather than classroom-style rote learning.

I’ve found Duolingo a good starting point for the basics. An app you can download to your phone. There is a free version with ads - it takes longer but it helps you learn more I found initially. They tend to give you special offers to subscribe at times, but it isn’t absolutely necessary, although you can start to get through the lessons quicker. Personal choice really. When you’re in Spain the Spanish love it when you try to speak Spanish and they will help you more!!

Thanks. I got the same advice from an English lad with Anglo/Spanish/Dutch heredity who lives in Barcelona. He said to avoid learning Spanish in Fuengirola because it has a quirky dialect. Better to wander off to Madrid if I need ‘proper’ lessons, following Duolingo… but if I’m going to wander in and out of the Malaga province, then maybe I shouldn’t make the effort to sound more Castilian ….
