Please be very careful about telling people about face masks for the prevention of infection against this current any any other form of viral or bacterial contagens. It is vitally important to understand how and why a preventative mesh in between the atmosphere and the respiratory system operates effectively. (As a barrier to prevent your possibly infected sputum being released to others it may reduce the projected spread should you sneeze or cough, but you do increase the amount of contaminated material building up in the material weave and then droplets falling onto surfaces without your immediate awareness. These droplets would be highly infectious.) To prevent yourself from direct exposure, In the case of normal aiborn particulates such as dust, pollen spores, even to a lesser degree trace metals attached to carbon from engines etc, will be prevented from inhalation or ingestion by the use of paper based filtration masks. This is based on a simple principle of having a mixed weave mesh of sufficient layers to block particulates prior to entering the airways. Once bound by excess, these filters are replaced and disposed of.
These standard particulate masks have a porosity that cannot and does not offer any form of resistance to micro particulate matter such as a viral spore or microbiological cellular medium. At best these are ineffective & at worst actually dangerous due to your unknowingly increasing the available surface area to be contaminated by media near and centred to your respiratory passages. (This is increased icrimentaly with the use of scarves or home made masks from old clothing.) Mask are manufactured in a particular way for microbiological usage, they are mainly used for minimal time scales and disposed of very frequently.
My advice to you all would be to feel free to wear a mask if it makes you feel safer in an external environment, but in reality, ensuring your hands are kept away from your face, frequently washing or sanitising your hands is far more effective in prevention. If you are around someone wearing a scarf which is around their mouth or nasal areas, please stay well away from their immediate vicinity.
