My wife and I lived and worked in Estepona area for 12 years and so had a credit sized cards with our    NIE numbers.

We intend returning in September, hopefully for more than 6 months and need to know if we need to       apply for new numbers. We have been back in the UK for 6 years.

Many thanks

Doug

Hi there,

Your NIE is for life, unless you get divorced in which case your wife would need a new one if she changed her name. So, no, you won't need a new one! That'll give you more time to enjoy yourselves instead of spending hours getting one done - the system has changed snce you got yours and it's A Mission now.

I don't know. At the moment you wouldn't but Brexit may change some of the regulations so, you need to keep up with developments. Citizens Advice are generally on the ball.

Hi Doug. I know you posted back in January and your question has already been answered in that your NIE numbers would still be valid.  However I wanted to add that you will still need to apply for residency here if you haven’t got this in addition to the NIE.  Uk citizens currently have until the 31/12/2020 to apply under the current rules, after this date it is expected the rules to be much stricter as they are for other 3rd countries.  If you have any more questions about this is require any help, please do not hesitate to ask.

If you buy a holiday home you do not need residencia.  You can only apply for residencia if you plan to stay for more than 90 days and live here as your main home.
