We are considering returning to living in the area of where we own a house. We lived on the coast in Estepona for 13 years and have many friends there. While in Spain we both worked in education and in retail.

Although we are now retired from full time work we would be happy to work part time, on a self employed basis.

I understand that the regulations may have changed in the initial cost and set up of this but not sure where to get the best advice. IF we were to return on this scheme would we be covered for health matters for example. IF we did not work, even part time I assume that we may need private health insurance, but not sure on this point

We would bring our Spanish rescue dog back to Spain in our UK registered car and need to check the regulations for doing so and consider the best route etc.

Any general or more detailed advuce, or where to find it would be appreciated.

Many thanks. Doug

If you are employed or self employed here you would be covered with state health care.  Costs for self employment can be as much as 300 per month.  If you are retired in the UK you can currently as an EU member apply for an S1 from the UK to receive free health care here.  This may not be possible if you apply after December 2020 because of Brexit.  If you have none of these then you would need to pay for private health care.  After you have lived here for 1 year there is an option to pay into the state health system.   If you need to know anything else please ask.

Hi Doug

Forgot to say also about the car.  If you plan to keep it in Spain you will need to register it onto spanish plates.  As an eu member there are no import taxes, after 31/12/12 they may be.  To register it onto Spanish plates can take up 4 weeks and if you don’t have residency already should be done at the same time to avoid registration taxes.

Yes a good point.

Not sure if by then we will be allowed to travel, but hopefully so.

I'm the meantime are making tentative arrangements for our trip.
