Hi there, and welcome to the lovely Costa del Sol!
I can only speak for the bank I use (Sabadell) but, you will certainly need your NIE and passport. I brought along some hard copy statements from my UK bank, and until my residencia came through, my account here was opened in my old UK address. Sabadell are very good, as they offer all their services in a variety of languages. Maybe go to your local branch of different banks and see what kind of reception you get, and how easy they are to deal with. As in the UK, they are not all the same!

We have just opened an account with Sabadell as recommended by our lawyer. He says that it is the best banks for Ex-Pats. We have found them most helpful and efficient and more importantly, very quick in their response.
Good luck.

You need an NIE to get anywhere in Spain, it's a bit like a National Insurance number. You most certainly will not get a bank account without one.

Will I need it even if I am not working or have any income from Spain?

It's very difficult to live here without one, and in post Brexit Spain (unless it's cancelled) it puts you at risk of being unable to claim reciprocal or historic services, such as health. It's virtually impossible to rent somewhere to live, 100% impossible to buy anywhere. It's not difficult to get, although you will be better off going through an agency that does all the leg work for you. You don't have to live here permanently, or be working, to get one. It really does make life easier.
