Please would somebody advise me, as a non driver, is Competa suitable for living? Are there regular bus routes to other towns and the coast please?

I've seen Competa online videos and on TV and seems a nice friendly active place. I enjoy markets and want to get into painting/pottery/crafts, that kind of pastime. Oh plus eating! I love eating tapas. 🙂

Hi there,

Competa is pretty isolated, even though a map might make it look close to other places. The reason is that it's positioned high in the foothills of the sierra, and is a bit of a driving mission to get into and out of. It can get cut off after heavy rains, as mudslides are common. It's a very beautiful town but, you really need a car to live there. I decided not to have a car when I moved here so know all about public transport in the region, and Competa was almost bottom of the list when I was looking for places to live as there's a poor bus service.. Even with a car, it can be a bit of a drive to get to other places. If you are not interested in exploring the region, or don't think you'll need to get to the local hospital or need emergenct health care, or don't fanct many days on the coast, then maybe Competa is for you. It sounds as if you've never been there. Why don't you come for a week's holiday and see what it's like? After all, where you live is a very individual, personal decision, and it may be you find it's perfect. Many people do think it's perfect!

Hi 🙂

Thanks for your opinion and things to brar in mind too.

I'm not moving for some while yet but am enjoying learning the language and discovering areas to visit when I fi. I think I'm going to be renting for a year at least before buying as have do many areas to stay in to get ' the feel ' .

I'm even part of the other Costa forums as aren't even sure what coastline I want yo live near yet! 😁 I was set on Costa Blanca but now much further South appeals too. I simply enjoy many environments.

Perhaps Competa (bearing in mind the distance to important things like hospital, train/bus routes, etc) maybe better as one of those villages nice to visit but not to live.

I see your location says your at Torrox. That was another area I really liked look at.  Would you share how convenient Torrox is for you as you dont drive either?.

There are many people in Cómpeta who live here without cars, and the health service is extremely good, we have 24/7 doctors and nurses and our own ambulance, and for serious cases, the air ambulance is able to park here as well.

There are 3 daily buses to Malaga and during the summer we have more buses that got down to Torre del Mar on a daily basis.

I have lived here for 20 years and never known Cómpeta to be cut off, maybe if you live in the campo your own track might get cut off. And it is not difficult to get to places if you have a car at all. I think whoever wrote the last message cannot pass judgement if she/he has not lived here and paint Cómpeta as not a good place to live.

Your hobbies are well covered in the village, we have plenty of art galleries, and courses are run for ceramics as well as painting. We have an Annual Cómpeta Artwalk, and this month we have our Artisan market taking place for days.

Social life is very good and there are many nationalities that live here, it is very cosmopolitan.

We have some great restaurants/bars and have many groups and singers up here, as well as the bars arranging for artist to come up from the coast.

You definately need to come for a visit and check it out for yourself.

Thank you so much for sharing with me your experience of Competa. I will definitely visit and stay for a while as really seems right up my street with what it has to offer. The fact it has alot of social things going on and regular buses to the Coast in Summer is great.

Really looking to exploring this area 🙂
