I will be driving from Scotland to Competa.  As we intend staying in Competa for approx. 8 months, and I am not allowed to drive my car there for more than 6 months, is it possible to garage the car for 2 months in Portugal and solve my problem this way? I know many of you come and go to solve this problem; staying here 6 weeks/6 months at a time. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. After the 8 months are over, I intend driving down to Malta to register my car there (I am Maltese) as I will not be going back to the UK except on holiday, and would rather have EU number plates because of Brexit.

I cannot comment on the actual legal position but can speak from my experience.

Four years ago I was able to insure my car here after the 6 months as I had not yet become a resident so not yet forbidden from driving a foreign registered car. (Of course, in Spain most annual car insurance is annual and non refundable, only transferable.)

That was pre-Brexit though.

As long as you have a valid MOT I think you could be ok BUT if the Guardia / local police are Brexit vigilant they may well not allow it. The problem will be that they will want your car registration to match your nationality or residence, and your car will do neither! Things are rightfully tightening up in Spain and lots of silly illegal Brits are either going 'home' or 'heading for a fall'.

With Brexit there is massive change. Lawyers and law enforcers often don't agree about what is, and what will be, legal!

By the way, I had to transport my car back to UK for silly money in the end because I couldn't legalise it here on a technicality.

The drive down is a brilliant, unforgettable experience and Competa is a great place for an extended stay.

You could ask on CAB Spain for advice - or I could recommend you a Competa based English speaking lawyer for the definitive answer.
