We at present live in Scotland but will be travelling to the South of Spain where we shall be staying for 6 months..

We have three small dogs not used to hotweather and would appreciate any advise to help them cope with the raised temperatures both while travelling and also when we arrive in Competa..

We are stopping over several times on route so their time spent travelling in the car should not be a problem other than the heat....

Your advice will be greatly appreciated..

Evelyn

Hi there,

When are you coming over? If it's in the next 2 months then, yes, it will be noticeably hotter than the UK, Scotland especially (I am a Scotswoman, so I'm not being insulting!). However, after August the temperature drops and becomes more like a nice summer's day in the UK, it just lasts for much longer. Winter months are comfotrably mild. So, the advice is the same as a hot day in the UK. Walk them in the morning and evening, lots of drinks, keep in the shade - same goes for humans! Of course, leaving them in the car is a no-no. Spain has recently upgraded their laws regarding animal welfare, and are trying to be strict about imposing fines etc. I'm sure you will be responsible owners but, bear in mind you can be fined on the spot if you are considered to be acting negligently (such as leaving them in the car, for example).

Many people bring their dogs for extended stays, and discover Spain is not necessarily as guilty of animal cruelty as many people believe. Enjoy your time here!

Hi,

Many thanks for your valued advice..We will be arriving beginning September..so hopefully not be hit with such high temps..

Glad to hear Spain is clamping down on animal cruelty..The last time we were there in April we reported someone in Competa for keeping two partridges in such small cages they hardly had room to move..also facing into the sun..

Whether anything was done about it I don't know..I do hope so...

Cheers,

Evelyn

Yes, there are still many instances where animal welfare is not respected but, at least there are the means to do something about it, and the attitudes here are rapidy changing. I guess as long as we Brits have our own track record, we can't afford to be too sniffy about it. Do you know there is a dog rescue centre in Torrox? We are always looking for volunteers - walkers, kennel cleaning, work in our two shops. If we can recruit folk who know how to work with dogs, so much the better.

If you are here for a while, it's a great way to meet people, as well as help a very worthwhile cause.

We certainly have thought about offering our services both being animal lovers and knowing the benefits of rescuing...We have a little Romanian rescue who has come on leaps and bounds since joining us last year....

We will probably meet you in the charity shop closest to us in Competa..Torrox?

Hi,

You'd be very welcome! Our shops are in Torrox costa, one opposite Mercadona on the main road through, the other at the top of Avenida del Faro.

See you there!
