Hi

I am currently living in France, and considering a move to Spain. I have a 6 year old boy with autism. I need to find as much information about schools and help for a child with special needs? TIA

I live in Trabuco and the school here is excellent. Most Spanish schools are very supportive of children with extra needs.

Hi Denise,

I just would like to add before moving to Spain that you check on the following items and how they might affect/or not your life there.  I know there is quite a spectrum with Autism and your son may be high functioning but I am sure you do not need more worry in your life than you have.

1. Check health care requirements, specifically in regard to your son.

2. If you plan to become a tax resident (more than 183 days per year in Spain) and it sounds as if you do then you must check on tax requirements.  Spain is probably very different than France.  You wouldn't want to find yourself paying more tax if you moved.

3. If you own assets over 50,000 euros then you must check on the Modela Form 720.  This is really critical so please make sure you check this out well.  You cannot hide world wide assets from the Spanish Tax Authorities.

Its really best to speak with an Accountant/Lawyer rather than any individual as people do not know, what they do not know (but often like to act as if they do).  Getting caught unawares isn't an excuse with the Tax Authorities.

Other than that, good luck!

I believe that every mother will understand the level of autism her child has without being told to find out. All Spanish state schools have facilities for this.

Taxes are paid if you are employed, other local and national taxes are levied against your property.

How on earth can Spanish tax departments check on your assets if they are not in a Spanish bank? This is just untrue. British banks will never give this information to a foreign government, only when you use Spanish banks can they ask this. You can use your UK bank cards in Spain freely, just inform the bank beforehand.

Buying in Spain should always be done through an Abogado (Solicitor), not any estate agent. Mine handled everything for me.

Kevin:

I am not sure what your issue is with my comment to Denise about her son, other than I suggested she check on Health Insurance as there may be issues.  Something one would NOT wish to face AFTER they moved to Spain regardless of how great the schools are.

Your advice regarding assets is also incorrect.

There is much information available online about this.  Here are two excerpts.

https://www.marbellasolicitors.com/modelo-720-tax-declaration-form-assets-outside/

https://www.spanishpropertyinsight.com/2020/02/03/tax-form-modelo-720/

I also ended my advice to Denise to talk to a professional re her specific situation instead of individuals who do not have the facts.

Hello Denise

Unfortunately I have little idea about how everything works here as I have only recently moved to Estepona myself. I saw your message because I was searching for work. I am hoping to work at some stage as a carer for people with autism. This was my primary job in Australia as of just recently. I am 44 years old and I have 17 years of experience in the area and have worked across all age groups and levels of disability. Should you ever move to this area of Spain and require an experienced carer for work outside of normal hours etc… please don’t hesitate to contact me. I am fluent in English, Spanish and also have a little French but it is fairly rusty.
