we are coming to live in Estepona from 1st September for a minimum of a year, and would like to know if there are any social gatherings or expat clubs we could join to help us settle in and get to know new people locally- (we being me, Rachel and my husband Alan) thanks!

ICE, the international club of Estepona, is very welcoming and offers lots of different groups, events and outings. It has a club house at Bahia Dorada which is quite unusual for a private club.
Or....mad thought, why not move in, start living your life, get out and about and meet new people some of whom you will like, others of whom you won't and generate your new social circle across a variety of nationalities the old fashioned way? It strikes me that joining a club of other ex pats is a sure way of not integrating into the country of your choice. I always remember being taken to the British Club in Bahrain many years ago. One visit was enough to send me running for the hills (read sand dunes)....full of ex pats wishing they were still in the UK and trying desperately to create a little England. Why they didn't just stay there was beyond me. No wait, the tax free salary helped enormously. Not the case in Spain of course but nevertheless Estepona offers lots, embrace that, not join some club..... #justsaying
If you enjoy singing and can sing in tune the Coro CantoLibre choir would welcome you. Not necessary to be able to read music. We rehearse Monday mornings in Estepona and Thursday evenings at a venue between Estepona and Sabinillas but most members only attend one rehearsal a week. If you are interested, I can send you more information. By the way, if from your nickname you are Dutch, we have three Dutch members (and other nationalities).
Mike
hello Mike
thanks for your reply- sorry but neither me nor my husband Alan can sing a note, we are hopeless! (I'm actually Scottish but my previous name was Hollands , hence dutchruth)

Hola Andy
Your post caught my attention as you mentioned Bahrain. I lived there with my parents - in the mid 70's and my Dad started the Hash House Harriers. Am now going to Estapona with my partner for 8 weeks fro mmid January (having spent 8 weeks in Nerja this year). Might be nice to meet up but guess you are talking about more recent times?
Alison
Hi Alison
I was in Bahrain from the early 80's and Middle East generally for another 12 or so years.....
I'll be here in mid-Jan until about the end of Feb then back in the UK for a few weeks before returning here for April/May so give me a shout if you are about and at a loose end :)
Andy
HI Mike, I saw about the choir on another post. Do you need to be a permanent resident to join? My friend is a good singer and thinking of spending some time each year in Estepona- he used to belong to choirs in UK-he'd love to meet some other singers- He has some quite serious health problems which make too much activity difficult, but he can still sing.
Or if you know of any other more informal singing meet ups if the choir needs year round commitment etc.
Thanks, Ali
Hi Ali. We have members who are only here for parts of the year so the fact that your friend would not be here permanently is not a problem, and he would be most welcome to join. If he comes and you would like more information, please pm me.
Mike
Thanks for your reply Mike. We are in Estepona for a short time now. Are you meeting this week or next week, and if so would it be possible to either come along, or meet at the end for a quick coffee or something so he could meet other singers? No worries if you're busy, he can always get in touch when he's back-just an idea :-)
