We are searching different areas to buy a property for permanent living. Like the look of Duquesa and other coastal towns nearby. The village looks to be far from the coast and more centred round golf is this correct. Important to us is public transport, shopping (supermarkets)and hospital. Looking for a townhouse or 3 bedroom apartment. Any advise would be appreciated.

Duquesa is a lovely place to live but depending upon exactly where you live, you really need a car. The village, Castillo de la Duquesa, is right on the coast, next to the beach. If you live inland up the hill you will have to drive, walk or get a taxi to the A7 coast road which goes through the local town of San Luis de Sabinillas. If you live in Castillo you could walk to the roundabout where there are two supermarkets, Eroski and Dia. If you want to go to Sabinillas you will need transport. There are several supermarkets in Sabinillas. You could try to find a house or apartment in Sabinillas where everything is in walking distance, including the local Spanish NHS Health Centre. However, the nearest hospital is between Sabinillas and Estepona, and it is not yet open. There is a private hospital, Hospiten, on the A7 past Estepona going towards Puerto Banus. There are several English estate agents in Sabinillas, including Barringtons and Castles, who have websites.

Sorry, forgot to mention that public transport here is basically buses that go, at infrequent intervals, along the coast road. They do not go inland. No trains.

Hi Mike thank you for the information it’s a big help. Maybe have to look nearer Estepona will continue our search. We are both retired and would love to have restaurants within walking distance.

If you want restaurants within walking distance you could try looking for something near Estepona Port, which has plenty of restaurants and is also near two supermarkets, Supercor and Supersol. I think there is a local bus which goes past the port and to Estepona Town Centre. The Estepona Paseo is very nice to walk along and Estepona has a bus station from where you can get buses to Marbella and Malaga.

Mijas Costa very commercialised now. At least Sabinillas, Castillo & Estepona retain some semblnce of being Spanish. But it depends what you want.

Hi, I have lived in Puerto de La Duquesa for the past 25 years  and I find it to my liking. There is a taxi rank in The Port with a regular bus service on the main road that runs through to Gibraltar to the West and Malaga to the East. There is a good Medical Centre in Sabinillas which is the next town to the East of La Duquesa, about 3 kms. Hospitals are situated in Estepona, Marbella and Malaga and there is a private Hospital Sanitarios office in La Duquesa complete with ambulances. In The Port there are two large supermarkets, one smaller one and an English Butcher that sells many UK products and a good variety of meats etc. In Sabinillas there are four more Supermarkets,  patisseries etc etc. In The Port there is a good Chemist and two more in Sabinillas. The Post Office is in Sabinillas.

Yes, there is an accent on golf as there are many first class courses in the very near vicinity and many International events are held close by, including The Ryder Cup  European and Spanish Opens over the past few years. There is also a good boating fraternity in The Port.

Lastly, as there are no Hotels in La Duquesa, the family tourist industry is relatively low.

I hope this little bit of information is of assistance to you.

Having recently sold up in Ibiza, we took the ferry to Denia in February, and we've driven all the way along the coast looking for an ideal coastal resort. We loved Mojacar and Nerja, but for us the ideal location is Estepona. It has a degree of culture and variety to add to all the usual attractions for ex-pats. Have yet to experience Estepona in full flow but once the lockdown has been relaxed and visitors begin to come back, the vibrancy of the place will come into its own.

Hi Myra

We bought in Duquesa via Primrise Estates who are on the main road going into Ssbillinas. Lynn who us the owner is do very helpful and gave us great support and deals with many areas. I am sure she would be a great contact for you whilst looking and understanding the areas. Good luck. If you need her contact details I will ask her if I can pass her mobile on or you can go via her estate agents.
