Changing ownership of car

We have just purchased a car second hand. Have the contract everything but have been told that we can’t transfet ownership because we are not residents in Spain. We are residents in Tenerife. Even before we were classed as residents we owned a car in our name in Tenerife so I am a little confused. Does anyone know of someone who can help us with this?
