We are considering a move to Coin from the UK. I am 74 and my husband is 70. I will have a EU passport (application in process for an Irish passport ). My husband just has a British passport. We have read about the Golden Visa scheme and if the purchase of our property goes ahead then we would qualify.

What we are concerned about is health insurance, obviously we won’t be working so wouldn’t qualify for social security. I did a quick online quote and with a pre existing condition, nothing major, the quote came back as €900 pm.

Just wondering what other expats have done regarding insurance, any advice warmly welcomed.

Thanks everyone!

Yvonne

I got a very good deal from Sanitas, a fraction of what you mention - however .......

Golden visa
If you move to Spain with a Golden Visa, private medical insurance is also necessary, although you can also request adherence to the Special Agreement and pay a monthly fee after having been registered in the register for one year. Those over 65 who move to Spain will continue to enjoy the same access to Spanish public health as Spanish citizens, through the S1 form issued by the United Kingdom. This is a certificate of entitlement to healthcare that recipients of a UK state pension.

Hi Yvonne,

If you qualify for the S1 then go for it.

The S1 means you have excellent health care from the Spanish NHS and the whole of the UK pays for it.

If you reply totally on private health care then you are treated like a business.

No money no care.

I have some friends that used private health care when here and they were unfairly treated when the money ran out.

Professional health workers from all over the world are attracted by the lifestyle of Spain, so the service here is very good.

'No money no care'

Correct, however, I am with Sanitas, which is part of BUPA, the cost was one third of what I paid UK and the service and facilities brilliant.

I also have an S1 which have never used, the state health care Spain is good, but can be long waits like NHS for many things, plus long waits in medical centres, Worth noting private GP;s here are very good and cheap, about 40-60 Euro which could be £200 in UK.

My wife and I are retired and with the S1 form we have enjoyed Spanish health care. Our experience has been good despite the Corona virus difficulties. We can get appointments online usually within a week or so and when we needed an urgent appointment, we simply went to the centre and were seen within a few minutes. We have also experienced hospital appointments for tests and minor treatment all of which have been good experiences. Prescriptions aren't free, but as a pensioner you only pay 10% of the actual drug cost. In my opinion, if you didn't feel the need for private insurance in the UK, you wont feel the need here.
