Hire Car best options for a few days?

Hi all, new poster here.

I have booked 90 days in an apartment 'on' the beach in Calahonda for the 2022/23 Winter season, playing the Shenzen 'game'.

I like to have vague plans in place well in advance and searching the taxis from Malaga Airport have decided it maybe better to hire a car for the first 3 days to get a better fix on the immediate area of Calahonda afterwards relying on public transport only.

Just wondering if cost wise there would be a saving by getting a train heading to Fuengirola and then picking up a hire car either in Fuengirola or for possible easier access to a car hire company, one of the stops along the route for instance Los Boliches?

I'm thinking of easy access to a car hire company rather than getting taxis from a train station to a car hire place and having to carry all my luggage around.

A further possibility is to get the train to Fuengirola and then get a taxi to Calahonda. Then hire a car in Calahonda for a few days.

Would any of these options make sense compared to hiring a car from the airport, returning it to the airport after a few days, and then getting the train to Fuengirola and bus to Calahonda without the pain of carrying luggage and with time not being an issue?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Hi

You need to catch the C1 Coastal Train from the Airport to Fuengirola . Then the take the M119  Calahonda - La Cala de Mijas - Fuengirola. See timetables below

Do not know about any Car Hire. Other forum users will have more information for you on this aspect of your emquiry.

Thanks for that info.

I would like to know the cost differences involved if significant, between Airport car hire or town car hire for example hiring from Fuengarola or from Calahonda?

I know in the UK I can get an airport bus from Birmingham airport into Coventry and hire a car in Coventry for a much lower price than picking it up from Birmingham airport.

I think you will get a better deal at the Airport, This firm one of the best https://www.hellehollis.com/en

This one of the cheapest, https://www.malagacar.com/

Uber is cheap here use your UK App and now Bolt even cheaper https://bolt.eu/

Thanks for that and pick up from the airport noted.

I checked prices on the two recommended and will probably go with your 'best' one Helleholis. Looks good and saves any messing around on trains etc.

I will be flying in from Marakesh so will pick a half decent time for landing (in the daylight if possible!)

Really looking forward to using a bicycle when there, trying to improve fitness after a stent insert for a leg vascular blockage. The surgeon on follow up has just given me the 'no restrictions news', so all's good!

A slow cycle along the boardwalk sounds the business (cycling times and restrictions will be fully adhered to btw!)

We use Helle Hollis when travelling over to our home, if you are there for 90 days enquire regarding their 'home owners' discount.

May be worth enquiring if you rent from the airport if you can return to their base in Fuengirola, short walk from the bus station you can get back to Calahonda quicker.

Thanks for your great info all.

I checked Malagar Car prices but they seemed to be nearly double the cost of Helleholis when I put in my dates for either 3 or 7 days, unless I am missing a trick on 'discounts' somehow?

I notice that some people hiring have the car insurance cover set up from the UK at a cheaper price than available from the car hirers, or is that just not necessitating upgrading from the basic hirers insurance?

Was wondering how that works?

I'm a bit rusty on the car hiring as I haven't hired one abroad for around 15 years!

Yes Malaga Car prices can bounce up and down with demand, the insurance you are talking about is 'access cover' below. It's a bolt on when you hire a car in Spain, but if very short term, like a few days I don't think worth it, you can pay as an extra, regular hirers have annual policies..

Thanks for that insight.

So only requiring 3, or less than 7 days hire and not really fussed about keeping the car over the weekend, so will probably stick at 3 days hire.

In that time I want to stock up on shopping (I'm mainly a home cook) and also pick up a cheapish second hand bicycle for the duration. I will be advertising for a bike around November time on the wanted forum and can hopefully get one coordinated with my arrival and pick it up in the car along with a fare amount of bottled water, although i guess delivery of bottled water is available?
