Hello everyone,

I recently retired to Spain and have read several posts regarding full coverage, health insurance which can be purchased for 60 euros per month. Can anyone let me know the name of an insurance provider who does so?

I would appreciate any information.

Gillian

Hi Gillian,

If you are in receipt of a UK State Pension then you are entitled to apply for an S1 Certificate from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). This will entitle you to free medical care in Spain. It is along process (can take up to 6 months) but is only accessible until we complete the transition period, it’s not available afterwards. Once issued it remains in place after the transition period and you will be registered with a local doctor and have a card issued by the local junta that covers the whole of Spain. With the card you get Prescriptions at 10% of cost and these are electronically added to your card, they must be collected within 24 hours or they will disappear.

Hope this helps.

I dont know about the 60 euros per month.  There are many different options and it depends whether you want full coverage or if you have any pre existing conditions.  My health insurance is alot more than that but I am in the process of seeking an alternative as I no longer need full comprehensive insurance.

The purpose of this message though is to advise you to find an insurance company, agent or process that you can use that doesnt require Spanish.  I have had a heck of a time with my insurance company since they have one person that speaks English and to find them is nearly impossible as you cannot wind your way through the voice messages and they do not regularly respond to emails.  Horrendous situation and so frustrating.

I would even suggest you contact English speaking agents and discuss how you will use the insurance and what the processes are if you cannot speak Spanish.

Good luck!
