Hi Everyone

We are thinking of moving permanently to Competa from the UK. We have been looking at houses on various web sites and are somewhat concerned about the huge number of houses for sale in the town. Can anyone please explain the reason for this? Is it because many of the houses are owned by British ex-pats as holiday homes and they are selling due to the time restrictions on occupation which will be imposed on us as non-EU citizens after the end of the Brexit implementation period? Or is the town becoming a less attractive place to live in due to the failure of businesses such as restaurants and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic?

Are there many ex-pats who are permanently resident in the town and are there any ex-pat societies which promote activities and get togethers in the town?

Many thanks in advance to those who respond as all information at this stage would be very helpful.

Hi Carol, I think you have made a wise choice with Competa. We looked all over Spain before settling on that area to buy our holiday home and finally bought one in the neighbouring village of Canillas de Albaida last year. To be fair there has always been a number of properties for sale in the area even Pre-Covid and I wouldn't read too much into how many you see on the market at the current time. Inevitably some of the businesses will be affected post lockdown but it is too early to say to what extent. If you join the Competa Social Facebook Group there is lot of helpful information and members may be able to allay any uncertainty you have. Good Luck!

We have bought a villa in competa and its a lovely pretty town with enough shops not to go anywhere else and plenty of good places to eat.  Still v Spanish and not spoilt by tourism.

Hi Carol

I too looked to buy in Competa. But after driving up and down to the village a few times, I realised why properties are cheaper and in abundance! The drive from the coast to the village is awful, and I couldn’t imagine wanting to do that too often! If however you’re happy to spend the majority of your time in the village and local countryside, then you could get a bargain and the area is beautiful.

I bought in Frigiliana, which is a stunning village and accessible!

All the best...

Hi Carol

I have just joined the forum for Competa and saw your post.  Did you manage to get to visit or buy in Competa and if so what are your thoughts on it.  We are just in the process of selling our house in the U.K. and have been thinking of Competa for a while and decided to try and rent, but by the sounds of it, it is a bit difficult to get to, so am now wondering if we should be looking elsewhere.  I would be interested to hear how it panned out for you.

Many thanks

Elaine
