On the coast it can still be very pleasant with temperatures of 20C a little like May or September in England. It's colder inland, away from the sea, (like it's also hotter in summer), the only risk 'rain'. but  no worse than British summer. As for transport pick a place along the rail line from Malaga airport, map in link, note Malaga Old Town great place to visit, in particular winter,

We had a week on the coast a couple years ago in January, 3 days at 15c, another 3 at 20/22c. Cooler in the evening/night. No rain that time, although the winters are the wettest months so don't rule it out

We've spent more time Feb/March, Feb similar to Jan, warming up in March. We usually get 3 or 4 days rain over 4 weeks

Hope this helps

For the passed 20+ years I have spent 3-4 months during January to April on the Costa del Sol (Mijas Costa) because the weather is so pleasant. Even if the air temperature is cool (C16C) in January the sun has a lot of warmth in it. By End March/ beginning April expect low 20s. Rain is never a problem. I only remember one day of solid rain, usually a shower which is over in an hour at most. I'd rather suffer the Spanish winter then the English!

Hi. Thank you for your comments.we are two lady friends looking to spend 4/6 weeks away for 1st time and Costa del sol was our 1st thought. I have spent couple weeks in Malaga in February which was pleasant. We believe train connection starts around Benalmadena. So Estepona etc is to far out. We are early 70's. Both reasonably fit. Enjoy walking and short round of golf. Idea's for nice area's would be helpful. Anywhere I guess from Malaga to coast. Thankyou Carole

The best golf courses are west of Malaga, not as far as Estepona, around Calahonda to Marbella. Yes, the train service finishes at Fuengirola but there is an excellent bus service all along the coast between Malaga and Marbella. In my opinion, the best part of the coast for your purposes will be found on the Mijas Costa. By the way, I'm in my late 70s.

Lots of Brits spent the winter hear until Brexit, but now limited to 90 days, unless you buy a Golden Visa.

The 90 days does not work out great, fir example, you can do Nov Dec Jan then can't come back until May.
