I am an Aussie living in Malaga and I need to buy a car.

I see many cars I would like to own, but many are far away in different parts of Spain.

Friends have advised me to buy locally because the paperwork MUST be in order and the car ownership changed before driving on a Spanish road.

Since I don't want to end up with a Madrid hotel bill while the paperwork goes through, what should I do?

Also how can I check the car's title before buying - money owing - dodgy history etc ?

Finally - how fast is the change of ownership process and where can this be done?

Any other info I haven't thought about, but should know.

Thanks in advance.

Hi There

Try and buy a Car from a reputable dealer in the Malaga Area. Have a look in the Sur in English as well as the Malaga Edition of the EuroWeekly News Newspapers. When registering your Car ,you will need, the Cars Permissio de Circulation, your Passport, your NIE or TIE Card, a copy of the Padron Certificate, not more than 3 months old, It is best to go to a Gestor or Gestoria in your area and pay up to é250.00 to have the Car re-registered( it can take up to 30 days for this to happen). I recommend that  you do  not buy privately as things can go horribly wrong. I recently bought a Car privately from  thankfully ,someone I knew , but had a Gestor help me with the paperwork.

Good Luck

Nigel

Hi

I recently bought from Cazoo.es  all done on line

Cazoo do all the checks and paperwork - delivered to the door -free trial for a week

I found the experience really good - they couldnt help enough

like you i didnt want to travel and found it frustrating when looking at cars the price advertised was often when done with finance Cazoo show the price you pay and offer finance separately

If nothing else its worth a look to compare pricing

good hunting

I can highly recommend Motorcade Spain whom I bought a car from after being here only 3 weeks (and knew nothing!) and they took very good care of everything for me and the car is still fantastic.  Run by an English guy so language is no issue either.  They set me up with Linea Directa for insurance (the best car insurance for English speakers!) and all other matters were arranged.

Used Car Sale | Mijas | Mijas Costa | Fuengirola (motorcadespain.com)

I also am aware of a German guy who has organized quite a few cars for people I trust.  I won't go into those details here but if you cannot find what you want he can organize everything for you and even buy a car from Germany and drive it over - all legit.  Its what he does....find cars for people.  He speaks German, Spanish and English.  If this is of interest private message me and I will forward you the contact details and you can take it from there.

Thanks Kerri, bit I'm running out of time and can't find the car I want to buy.

But I'll be back next year as usual, so I'll look around then.

Many thanks for the kind suggestion anyhow.

Hi Pete, probably too late but there is a good guide to buying a second hand car in Spain here

https://simpleenglishadvice.com/car-ownership-transfer/

Scroll down the page to the Car ownership transfer guide. They also offer a vehicle ownership transfer service. It might help you navigate the madness of buying a car  privately in Spain.
