Hi All

We wonder if any one has successfully moved their bank account to Transfer Wise or Starling to avoid the increased quarterly and monthly charges now charged by the major banks.

Transfer Wise looks a good option ,but the information we have read does not clarify if you can set up Direct debits on the account which is a necessity .

We would be grateful to know anybody else’s thoughts and experiences with this.

We really are not fans of Caixa bank anyway since it took over from Barclays the service is non existent and infact they are so rude , we dread having to go to the branch .

Also would it be possible to give authority to close the account from England due to the Coronavirus travel restrictions.

Many thanks Jane

Hi Jane, not used Wise (was transfer wise) but seeking alternative to main bank.

You can set up DD’s according to website. Search direct debit in help centre

regards

Andrew

I use Wise to transfer money from my American accounts to my Spanish and they have always been great.   I will give you the phone # in England that I call if I have problems:  +44-203-9360-573.   They are always very helpful and I am sure they can answer your questions.

Wise Euro accounts are domiciled in Belgium and therefore carry a Belgian IBAN

In general most Spanish merchants only accept Spanish IBAN’s and the only way to clear your lines is to ask each merchant individually

In practice even if Wise DD payments are possible, the prospect of trying to rectify Spanish merchant errors (eg continuing to make application for cancelled DD’s) is unappetising to say the least!

Hi

Thank you for that information ,very helpful.I wanted to be sure before I started to re direct Direct debits . As I am hesitant to do anything with the bank account , due to this sort of problem and then we would be in a worst situation. Do you think there is anything available to escape this vicious circle of charges with the Spanish Banks . We literally pay in and pay out 3 DDRs ? Somebody mentioned Starling Account ?

many thanks Jane

Hello Jane.  I would be interested in how this progresses.  We have seen an increase from 24 to 36 euros per quarter, for each of us at La Caixa.  Have read that this increase is since Brexit!!!  We have used Transferwise (now Wise) for years for our money transfers from the UK to Spain.  Within minutes the money is in the Spanish Bank Account.  Have always found this process very efficient and easy and rates always very competitive.  Thank you.  Pat
