New expats in Spain

Hi they haven't changed since brexit but please be aware that if you are not pensionable age, you will need private medical insurance which is about 60 euros per person per month.  When you apply for residency you will need to show that your bank balance had 6,000 euros per person available.  Good luck teresa

Thanks for your reply. Its quite a worry for my husband and I as we are not sure what to do now. We are both in our 70,s so we both receive a British pension. Are you saying that we would be able to get free health treatment if we moved to Spain? We are not rich but we would always have quite a bit  more than 6000.00 euros in our bank account.

Sorry, after reading your message again I realised you had said there has to be 6,000.00 per person in our bank account.  That will not be a problem but what was worrying us was how difficult is it going to be to apply for residency in Spain as we will hopefully be moving there at the end of this year.

Hi Diane.  You will need to get an S1 form from the DEpartment of work and pensions (available on the gov.uk website) which covers your healthcare costs in Spain.  Given that the 11 month transition period ends this year, I would make your move sooner rather than later! We moved out here last summer and are feeling so much healthier in the warmer climate, longer days of daylight which means we are more active! 

And applying for residency isn't difficult.  You can get a gestoria (para legal) to do it for you for about 75 euros. 

Hi Theresa,  many thanks for your replies they are very helpful. One thing going against us is the fact that we have to sell our house here in Portugal before we can buy anything in Spain.

Are you in a park or did you buy a private home?

Hi Diane.  We have an apartment here that we bought in 2002.   We are just in the process of buying a villa in coin.  We saw 32 houses before we found the right one! It's not that we are fussy, but some of the houses we have seen looked great on the website, but we're in poor condition when we viewed. Good luck! Teresa
