I am considering loading my car up and driving back here to Benalmádena as Spanish cars are expensive. Will it be worth registering it in Spain or not as it will obviously be right hand drive. Will I be able to drive it without re registering it once I have my Residencia?

Thanks Alan

Somebody with better knowledge is sure to help, but it's not as straightforward as you are hoping for. I think you have to re-register the car with Spanish plates within six months and that's not inexpensive. Plus you still have a RHD car which isn't massively convenient, thinking of car park barriers for starters....

I've not done it so none of this is from personal experience. Hopefully somebody with hands-on knowledge will give you some advice.

Alan,

I would recommend you search the internet to read about all the experiences people have had trying to save money bringing their UK cars to Spain.

There are two main reasons that I can see:

1. The Guardia Civil will use any excuse to pull a car over.  A right hand drive is a good reason.  Is that worth saving a bit of money for (I do not think so!).

2. Dealing with the authorities here can be a pain if you do not know how it works and don't speak Spanish.  By the time you have finished with all the difficulties with the legalities and requirements to get your car into the Spanish system, I wonder if its worth saving a little money?

All in all from my personal reading of this topic over the years it seems people wish they had avoided all that hassle and paid a little more to buy a Spanish car.  Just my opinion.  Good luck with whatever you choose to do!  Kerri

That’s interesting and informative. I get the point and will buy a Spanish car. I don’t think I really need the hassle

Hassle is something we don't need anymore.  We have enough with this Covid19 and its trail of stress.

Wise decision Alan.  :)

Alan I have just used a company in La Cala de Mijas, you will find Cars in Spain to be much more expensive than in the UK and so its well worth doing the research in advance.

I thought the same thing, so I looked for a LHD car in the UK. Bought my Mercedes in Leicester and drove it here. It was around 2000 Euros cheaper doing it that way, but just beware the mileage on some of the cars.
