Leaving Spain as a non-resident who had overstayed the 90 day rule

I was asked to advise the outcome of leaving Spain after exceeding the 90 day rule as non-residents:
We left by boat. At the ferry port, the border police noticed. They were not interested in seeing our medical documentation (explaining the reason for our overstay), and simply observed that our problem was not in leaving the country but in returning, i.e. we would have to stay away for the requisite period.
