I have just tried to put in an English mobile number and it wouldn't accept it, so maybe I will email them as you said an English number could be used. Hence I cannot move forward in opening an account.

I tried that from the UK in the Spain application and got the same result.  N26 have said the UK mobile number will work if I try the application again when located in Spain but I am not at all certain that will happen.  I have had so many great replies from my post including one earlier about Lobster Mobile which is €12 per month but you turn it on and off when you need it.

This is the sort of situation that is very worrying with these new online banks - N26 | An Update from N26 US — N26

I suppose we can 'assume' that would not happen as their business focus is Europe.  Still it leaves one feeling vulnerable if all your banking is with them.

As an optional bank seems like a good idea though.

Update:  I have checked the N26 and they will switch all direct debits in 10 minutes - No Charge.  --- For the same I pay Sabadell I can have their deluxe package which includes all sorts of insurance options.  I am going to meet with Sabadell in a week to see what they have to offer me before I make the switch.  Will keep this line updated with my progress for others.

Sorry Kerri I have only just seen your update, that's really interesting and it will be good to know what happens, thank you.

Technically you are supposed to be a resident with N26  (I am now) When I opened the account I was not, however, I did have a Spanish address and NIE number, my mobile was a UK number 44 & still is. Perhaps they have now changed, but my account still works fine. (You can get a cheap SIM deal with Lobster) https://www.lobster.es/

Hi

I have been looking at an alternative to Sabadell for a while as I just use it to facilitate my direct debits but at 40 euros a quarter it's too expensive for just that service. Not looked into N26 in detail yet but I did look at Revolut. However, Avatel, who supply my broadband, said "Unfortunately we cannot take payments from a Revolut account".  So, that's my main concern with these new app focussed banks, you could set up with N26 but will you have any difficulty with the direct debits going out for the utilities etc?  Any thoughts/experience would be welcome.

Thanks

Mike

And THAT is precisely my concern.  It might all sound good but as they say 'the devils in the details' and you don't know until you face a problem personally.  I agree that the Sabadell charges are high compared to other Countries I know but it is what it is in Spain and we get let off in other areas (my experience only!).

At the end of the day I need all my BILLS paid in a timely fashion and need to know that if I run into a problem there is someone to go and talk to.  We do, after all, rely on having our money available to us and not only in a German Online bank that seems to arbitrarily cut Countries off (as they do not fit their business model) and people's bank accounts (who knows why?).

Now before anybody says anything to my above comment......I am not slamming N26 at all as I have no direct experience with them but they have bad reviews just like all banks do.

Hi David

When I last contacted N26, I confirmed I would own property in Spain but would still be a UK Resident and they confirmed opening an account under those circumstances is fine because of the property and I already have an NIE number.
