Hi

We are looking into moving to AEG. We are husband (60) wife (49) and daughter (11).

We will be self sufficient (own income) and will be renting for the first year.

Could you please share your experience of living in AEG, anyone used Sunland School?, what activities are available expats, any other English families??

Many thanks Jayne

Anita

Good morning Jayne

Our children are all adults and live in the UK so I can`t help you with information about schools etc. We originally started on the coast in La Cala de Mijas and moved inland to Alhaurin el Grande about 3 years ago. We started in an apartment right in town opposite the UK supermarket. Very convenient for all the shops and amenities but quite noisy especially in the evening as we were above the popular La Fama restaurant. Also when the Feria is here the noise was unbearable. We are told local Spanish try and stay elsewhere. Worth knowing especially with a young child.

We moved into a rented property in the campo soon afterwards and we love it. You do need a car though as it is too far to walk into town, plus there is no pavement. It is quiet and all our neighbours are Spanish which suits us. We find generally all the Spanish here are welcoming and friendly and do appreciate it if you try and speak some Spanish. So if you are looking for this type of property it might not suit your daughter as she gets a little older and you would find yourself driving her probably into town to meet friends.

There is a Mercadona supermarket in town but if you prefer Lidl or Aldi you will find them in Cartama. Plenty of banks, post office, and small shops that cater for just about everything. If you want a shopping centre then Miramar in Fuengirola or La Cañada near Marbella. Food prices generally very good.

The climate is good but extremely hot in July and August. We do get heavy rain sometimes between November to February but usually it passes very quickly.

There is an English pub called the Black Horse in town and many more in nearby Coin. We volunteer for an animal rescue charity and have found this is a good way to meet other ex pats if that is what you want. It is also very rewarding and keeps us occupied.

Hope this is of some help. Good luck.

My wife is head of primary English at Sunland and my son (10) has attended for the past six years and loves it. The school has undergone huge renovations during the summer and , although I haven’t witnessed the improvements, have been informed that it is amazing. My son is heavily into sport which the school more than provides for and also the sports facilities in Alhaurin are second to none. If you would like any more info then give me a call-616547055.

Thank you so much for replying. We are coming out to ALhaurin tomorrow and will be visiting the school on Tuesday. We will be looking at houses in alhaurin. Do you live in the area? What areas would you recommend for English expats?

Kind regards Jayne

Hi Jayne

It really depends on whether you want town life or country(campo). Both have their own attractions. Also whether you don't mind driving. I think there are a large number of ex pats in the Alhaurin Golf urbanisation. Alhaurin de la Torre I understand has more Brits living there if you wanted to take a look.

Hope your visit goes well

Kind regards

Anita

It really does depend on your budget and also your personal requirements. I do know that rentals are quite scarce at the moment but ,again, it does depend on what you need. Give me a call if you need any advice as I know it can be quite daunting relocating. Kev.

We have been in Alhaurin el Grande for 3 years and rent. We love this area but would suggest long term rental first until  you find your ideal place.
