Healthcare
Hi. Ready to retire to Spain but wondered if healthcare is free. We are 56 and 58 years old? Also if you have to be a resident how long do you have to have lived in Spain for?

If you are a pensioner, which you are not yet, then you can join the Spanish National Healthcare Service and it is free. You will need to be a resident and registered on the padron of your Ayuntamiento. Basically, I think that if you live here for more than six months then you should apply to be a resident. Certainly, if you spend more than 180 days per year in Spain then you should pay your taxes in Spain but that is separate from being registered as a resident. In the meantime, you can either pay monthly Social Security, which I believe is at least 260 euros per person per month, or buy private health insurance. To be a resident you must do one of these, and the private health insurance must provide at least the same cover as that under the national healthcare service, ie no co-payments. There are many private healthcare insurers in Spain.
