Hi, we are coming to view property in this Town soon,  looking to buy a second home. We have 2 kids and are hoping someone can tell us more about the area and what its like. We are also viewing properties in Rite and Iznajar. Any advice would be welcome.

Hi Darlojo,

I’ve had a holiday home in Trabuco now for nearly eight years, my daughter was 11 and my son 17 when I bought it. I can honestly say that it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. We looked at a few other properties in the area but decided pretty quickly that we loved the village for the following reasons,

1. Its a beautiful place with friendly people, not touristy (so prices are local and not inflated to cater for tourists) but with a fair number of British people living and visiting there, essentially a Spanish working village, which is what we were looking for.

2. There are a good number of shops and restaurants and a fantastic municipal swimming pool (open during the summer months only, which is the norm). As our house is in the village itself all these are within walking distance so we can go out for an evening meal and not have to drive, likewise as if your kids are old enough, or as they get older and have friends visiting they can get to the pool themselves.

3. It’s only about 50 minutes from Málaga airport. We fly from Newcastle, an early 7.00am flight  gets us to our house by about 2.00pm.

4. Public transport, whilst not brilliant timetable and destination wise isn’t bad so you can come and not have to hire a car. (Which I do in the summer, since we only hire a car when my husband is over).

5. It’s brilliantly situated mid way between Málaga and Granada, both fantastic cities with very individual characters and lots to see and do. It’s also not too far from the coast if you’re after beaches. If you’re keen on walking there are also plenty of walks in the area, and there are some super serious cyclists around too!

6. The village always has lots on in the summer, there are traditional religious processions, flamenco concerts, rock nights etc. I went to a great (free) flamenco concert last year!

All in all I definitely don’t regret my choice of buying in Trabuco. I’ve been to Iznajar for swimming in the lake there which was lovely and can be recommended (though water levels are very low at the moment), I’m not so familiar with the village itself, though it’s very picturesque I guess it could get quite cold in winter and is not as easily accessible as Trabuco in my view. I’ve never been to Rute, so can’t really comment on that!

I hope you have a wonderful time house hunting, and manage to find what you’re looking for and I hope that my comments are helpful to you. If you want any more information feel free to ask! Out of interest the ‘Darlo’ Part of ‘Darlojo’ doesn’t mean you live in Darlington does it?

With best wishes, Inga

Thanks for your reply and yes I'm from Darlington - good guess! We are coming out from Newcastle on the same flight.

Can I ask you what the winters are like out there, thanks

I’ve never been over in Winter myself, but it can get quite cold since it’s up in the mountains. I’ve seen pictures with snow there. Generally speaking it’s milder though I believe, and of course the winters are shorter. I’ve been over at the end of October when it’s been lovely and warm and several times at Easter when it’s varied from mild and warm to torrential rain!

The Darlington guess wasn’t too hard, I’m from Hartlepool!

I’m sure you’ll have a lovely time, we were there a week ago and the weather was great. Let me know if you buy in Trabuco! Good luck x

We were over in Trabuco the week before Christmas.  During the day, I sat with a strappy t-shirt on, while the folks living there wore puffer jackets and woolly hats - they all thought I was mad!  In the evenings and overnight, however, it does get very cold, so make sure you have heating facilities in any property you buy - the houses are designed primarily for keeping the heat out.  You can get snow up on the hills around the village and even in the village.  This year has seen an unusual (as I am led to believe) amount of rain, even during April, but the rain is interspersed with sunny days.  Regardless of the weather, Trabuco is a lovely, friendly place to be and I cannot recommend it highly enough.  We plan to make it our permanent home as soon as possible.

Thanks for your reply. We didn't see anything we liked the first time but going back soon to take another look.

Hi Sandra, yes we bought a property in Trabuco and we love it. He are over her now. Anything I can help with just ask away. I did the whole process myself and found it easy.

I bought through a wonderful lady who also actually lives in Trabuco too.

Look up Gateway to Andalucia (Barbara).
